VDF Researchers and Friends

Here are people who have created, joined, supported and worked with VDF. Some are current VDF researchers while others have moved on. Some are (were) full-timers and others are (were) resource persons. They are listed roughly in order of acquaintance. They have been significant driving forces of VDF and we consider all of them as the VDF family.

Kenichi Ohno (VDF co-leader, GRIPS professor)
PhD from Stanford Univ (USA). After working at IMF, taught economics at Tsukuba Univ. and Saitama Univ. First visit to VN in 1995. Now a GRIPS professor but most of his time is spent in VN to direct VDF research activities.

Pham Hong Chuong (VDF coordinator, NEU)
Deputy Head of NEU's International Cooperation and Scientific Management. MA from Canada and PhD from NEU. Has skill and experience as a hub of international cooperation at NEU. Supervises VDF's operation and external relations.

Mai The Cuong (Former VDF researcher, NEU lecturer)
Studied MBA focusing on marketing at International Univ (Japan), where he was founder of Consulting Club and vice president of ASEAN Student Assoc. Initial member of VDF. Believes marketing approach can be applied to both life and work. Interests include marketing, FDI, ODA and industrial development. Loves to be a consultant.

Giang Thanh Long (GRIPS PhD student, NEU lecturer)
After completing IPP (formerly ICS) program at Hitotsubashi Univ (Japan), he came back to Hanoi and joined VDF as initial member. In 2005 he returned to Japan to pursue PhD at GRIPS. He specializes in social security issues.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen (Former VDF staff; lecturer at University of Hanoi)
After completing a master program at Leeds Univ (UK), Huyen worked at VDF as initial member until 2005. Wrote a paper on Korea's political and economic development.

Nguyen Chi Thanh (State Bank of Vietnam)
GRIPS master degree in 2003. Prof. K. Ohno was his advisor. After returning to SBV, Thanh was a part-time VDF researcher until 2005. Did research on exchange rate management and balance of payments sustainability of VN.

Do Ngoc Huynh (Tax Policy Dept, Ministry of Finance)
PhD from Osaka Univ (Japan). Fluent in Japanese. Initial key member of Japan-Vietnam Economist Club, which later became VDF Tokyo. Wrote a number of technical papers on various issues.

Azko Hayashida (GRIPS Development Forum)
Prof. K. Ohno's research assistant. Knows more about Professor's schedule and budget than Professor himself. VDF budget and contracts are under control of Azko. Also manages VDF Tokyo, publication, symposiums, etc. on the Japanese side.

Asuka Suzuki (Former staff at GRIPS Development Forum)
Prof. I. Ohno's research assistant. She supports many projects at GRIPS including websites, publication, planning, logistics, etc. Asuka supports VDF web and solves technical problems when necessary.
 

Pham Truong Hoang (VDF Researcher, NEU lecturer)
Doing research on industries, esp. motorbike industry and supporting industries. Supports and cooperates with VDF regularly in both Hanoi and Tokyo. Speaks Japanese fluently.

Nozomu Kawabata (Professor, Tohoku Univ)
Specializes in industrial economics, especially steel industry. Comes to VDF one or two times a year to update information and conduct policy analysis. Also sends his students to Vietnam for research. Cooperating closely with Prof. K. Ohno since 2000.

Duong Kim Hong (Former VDF researcher)
Research interests in social issues such as street children and internal migration. Supports VDF's operation through editing drafts, research logistics, accounting, website, etc.

Ngo Duc Anh (Former VDF researcher, PhD Program at Texas University)
MBA from Univ of New Orleans. He joined VDF as a researcher from 2004. In 2008 he returned to U.S. to pursue PhD at Texas University. He specializes in international business.

Le Ha Thanh (VDF researcher, NEU lecturer)
Environmental specialist with both theoretical and policy interest. Writes papers using I/O tables and social accounting matrices. Also works on industrial issues. PhD from NEU.

Junichi Mori (Former VDF-Tokyo researcher; UNIDO Vietnam official)
Business experience at Japanese electronics company in Malaysia. Master's degree from Fletcher School, Tufts Univ (USA). VDF visiting researcher before joining GRIPS and VDF Tokyo as full-timer. Specializes in electronics and supporting industries. Also assists motorbike master plan. At present, he works at UNIDO Vietnam.

She joined GDF to help GDF/VDF activities while Azko's absence. She has been working as a secretary for a few foreign firms. She is very fond of Horse Riding & Traveling.
